Parenting Tips: the Struggle to win makes both sides lose


We keep ending up in the power struggle with our teenager. Even when we win, I feel we all lose. What can we do differently without backing down?

Most of the power struggles between parents and teen-agers is a lose/lose proposition.

Remember the commercial a few years back that had two Rams butting heads repeatedly on the top of a mountain? The Slogan was "Dodge trucks is RAM tough!" Although they have horns to butt in, it always looks pretty painful for me.

I think it's the same when parents and teens butt heads.

So where in the world, we had the idea to parent-teen relationship is the other side lose and a fight in which one side has to win?

One of the largest sources of power struggles is the belief that not only each page have to win every battle, they have to battle any question arising.

Parents have purchased false belief that they always have to "win" to be good parents.

In passion, exuberance, and "wisdom" of young people think a teenager that each class is a struggle for independence that must be won at any cost.
